Mayo-not.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 9:17 pm

Not being a culinary swashbuckler (unlike my friend Elisson, who has partaken of all sorts of horribles, including whale meat), I don’t normally dispense food advice. However, I learned yesterday that the way to absolutely ruin a beautiful piece of chicken all cut up and ready to become chicken salad is to use Hellmann’s Low Fat Mayonnaise.

In a word, BLECCHHH. One taste and the bowl of chicken salad went directly in the trash without passing Go.

Moral: Beware the green lid. If it’s not Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise, don’t bother.

That is all.

  1. There are very few things that “low fat” doesn’t bugger up beyond all repair. I tried low fat cheese once… travesty.

  2. OMG – Holee Crap! Low Fat Mayo – there is no such thing. It’s some garbage whipped up by food companies to make people feel they’re getting something for nothing. GAK!!! If it ain’t real don’t eat it – is my motto. Unfortunately we sometimes misread the labels and all is lost.

  3. AMEN Jimbo. Mayo is “perfect food” BECAUSE of the fat….just so sorry about all that chicken.

  4. I may have eaten of Leviathan (whale is actually pretty tasty – like pastrami) – but Hellmann’s Low-fat “Mayonnaise”? Blecch!

  5. Jim, you are so right! Hellman’s Real Mayo is great, as is Duke’s. My wife is a registered dietitian and tried to sell me on the low-fat Hellman’s with the light blue lid. It stinks! I’d rather have nothing than use that stuff. I’m not sure this is as important as all the unsavory and unpalatable programs and government cheese we are being force-fed on a daily basis, but it just might be an allegory of it. Only with the mayo-we have a choice.

  6. Wow, Lo-fat mayo would be like drinkng alcohol free vodka, what is the point?
Note to self: Does living in NJ have anything to do with this strange delusion?

  7. General rules of thumb:

1 Low-Fat = Low taste, No Fat = No taste

2 Diet is just “die” with a “t” added.

  8. Man, for me, it’s gotta be Best Foods Real Mayo. Everything else is just an imitation.

And don’t even go near me with a bottle of Miracle Whip, unless you want to be wearing the contents.

  9. Forget mayonaise. Miracle Whip is the way to go!

  10. I still remember a few years ago when I had a contract with a company in Dallas. My boss was into all these low-fat/no-fat products. She brought in a big box of no-fat fig newtons. I tried one and told her if I wanted to eat sawdust I would at least get good sawdust. That stuff was so dry and tasteless I wondered why bother.

I had a doctor friend who told me I could eat anything I wanted; I just needed to use discretion on the amount. I use very little sugar (a 1 lb box will last me a year) so I don’t bother with sugar substitutes. I just cut down on the quantities. Besides the difference between a tbsp of butter and a tbsp of margarine is not a whole lot and if you only use a tbsp then knock yourself out and have the good stuff. Why eat something that just tastes terrible just to fill the craving. Eat something good and ration the amount. Better for you in the long run. The other thing is just about the time we get all told what is good to eat we find that they lied to us any way.

  11. I’m with Dick on this. I eat all real stuff, just monitor the amount. Real mayo, butter, sugar… no imitation stuff for me.

  12. Craft Free Mayo is the best. All the other low fat versions suck. I have been able to convert even the most die hard mayo fans to Craft Free.

But I agree, sometimes it’s better to use the bad stuff sparingly than to try acquiring a taste for the “good” stuff.

  13. Hellmann’s used to make a flavor called “Just2Good” mayo. (It was the only brand of reduced fat I would eat.) And, it was awesome.

Your yuck mayo, it apparently the re-imagining of my beloved Just2Good.

Hellmann’s claims it’s the “same great flavor,” but they lie! LIE!

  14. And, I once dumped a guy because he ate Miracle Whip and JIF peanut butter.

I’m all, “Clearly this is a love that can not be.”
