Civilized Living.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 9:31 pm

I had read about Pyrat Rum a while back at my buddy Yabu’s site, and I’ve been on the lookout for it ever since. Last week, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bottle of Pyrat XO Reserve in a smallish liquor store not far from the House by the Parkway (South). It went immediately into the shopping cart.

Rather than crack it open as soon as I returned from the store, I decided to wait for the proper time to sample what promised to be a rare treat. Turns out that last night was the perfect night. Comcast cratered for many folks in the neighborhood, which, for me at the House by the Parkway (South), meant that I had no television, no internet access and no telephones.

Rather than get all worked up over the outage, I pulled the cork from the bottle and poured a generous helping into a snifter (I can’t imagine drinking it any other way) and took it outside. I plugged in Mr. iPod and fired up a CAO Criollo Pato cigar. The outside temperature had dropped along with the humidity. The breeze was just right. Then there was the Pyrat – Wow. It’s a taste sensation – a veritable cornucopia of flavors one doesn’t expect with rum. Accompanying it with a good cigar and good music was just plain gottdamned civilized.

I’m loving this retirement thing.

  2. Funny but I could never have seen myself retired and now that I am I wonder why I waited so long. I am having a wonderful time being retired.

  5. If you like the Pyrat, look for a Haitian run called Barbancourt. They have a 15 yr old rum that’s absolutely amazing.

  6. Barbancourt is excellent… as is Ron Matusalem, another fine product of Haiti.

  7. I would not steer you in the wrong direction…I wish we could share that bottle and a smoke…and you’re right, straight up is the only way to go.

I’ve experienced Barbancourt, and I’ve experienced Ron Matusalem, and I’m not getting into any rum-dropping. They’re all good. I also have a great deal of respect for Bundaberg from Australia. The Australian cane is different from Caribbean cane. The flavor is “just” different. Not better, not worse…just different. I don’t think they export it, but I could be wrong. I used to get bottles from my Australian buddy from the Australian Embassy in DC. He had a Diplomatic Passport, and was called “home” often.

Jimbo, want me to send you a jar of BBBC…I’ve got one with your name on it, if you would like it. I’m not kidding.

  8. Jealousy. That used to be my MO when I lived in California… come home, grab a bottle of wine, glass and a cigar and sit on the deck staring at the stars. Thinking deep thoughts. Deeeeeeep thoughts.
