Fashion or a Fluke?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 6:31 pm

Knee high stockings.jpgThe other day I saw a young girl (I would guess her age to be about 13 or 14) on her way to school. She was wearing a skirt and knee-high stockings, the kind that women wear with slacks. It reminded me of the pre-panty hose days (Yes, I was alive then) when the old ladies would bunch their stockings in a knot just below the knee and wear them that way with a house dress.

I was wondering whether this “look” is now hip, at least around these parts.

I thought the kid looked pretty silly, but I’m sure if she were shown old pictures of me and my contemporaries marching off to school in boat-neck shirts and, later, with Beatle haircuts and wearing in Austin Powers – like duds, she’d think that we looked pretty damned silly too.

  1. It seems to be the style. A majority of the girls wear fish net knee highs..and generally with mini skirts. So far, I’ve been lucky. Haven’t had to deal with that with my eldest.

  4. Jim, don’t forget the pointy-toed “Beatle shoes”. I had a pair of them that I wore for a while…

  5. How bizarre. And tacky.

I remember those days too Jim. They tied them in a knot so they wouldn’t have to wear garters. I never understood why that was more comfortable. Maybe it wasn’t, just more secure.

  6. You weren’t examining fashion. You were just letching.

  7. My friends and I (who grew up in the layered-look ’80s) discuss this look frequently, the general consensus being that if you wan to be considered stupid, by all means, go around showing your lingerie.

  8. Amazing! Do you know that I am uncomfortable wearing knee hi’s under my slacks because I am afraid someone might peek under my pants leg and see them. I can’t even “imagine” parading around with them on while sporting a skirt……

  9. What happened to the thigh-high movement of the mid-90s? I seem to remember reading a notice about that fad speculating that an exercise fad targeting the mid-thigh would sprout up because of the hosiery style. I guess it never came to pass.

  10. I teach this age (and older) and I have not seen this phenomena yet. Then again, I teach in Central Pennsylvania. Not exactly the fashion capitol of the world. Sturdy pair of yer finest overalls and yer best boots’ll be jes fine ’round here. James Carville describes PA as, “Philadelphia & Pittsburgh with Alabama stuck in the middle”. Unfortunately, he’s right.
