A fellow blogger made an interesting point about the increase in insurance rates in areas with an overpopulation of deer. (See http://wheelgun.blogspot.com/2005/03/seal-hunting.html)

I'd never thought of that, but it makes sense. Those suckers can do a lot of damage to a car....one did about $2500 to mine once. Just imagine what hitting a bear would do.

Having lived in NJ and now in Japan, I would have to say that NJ does have a proportionatly higher population density. In Japan the cities are really crowded but the rural places are really rural. NJ definitely has a higher number of people living in the "rural" sections of the state.

Also, I don't think the Japanese would tolerate bears or any other dangerous animal in their commuter communities. I'm sure they would shoot them and figure out how to make raw bear meat tasty.

I'm convinced that NJ will finally address the problem after some poor child is killed by a bear. In Sommerset County, thinning the deer population with cars versus guns is preferred. Go figure!

Me neither. There was one hanging around a neighborhood close to ours a couple of years ago. I was totally paranoid until it was run out of town.

And don't believe that crap about black bears won't attack humans. I know too many people who can testify differently.

I read somewhere that NJ has a higher population density than Japan. It sure seems like it, anyuway. In Bergen County NJ, where I live, there are so many deer that they have started eating my yews. Can't wait to see what happens when my garden goes in. Shooting them is obviously not a great idea, not in a state where a guy in the neighboring town was convicted of numerous felonies for shooting a woodchuck in his backyard with a .22 pistol. It's too bad that NJ is so fekked up, because it could be a really great place. As it is, the Commies make it tolerable, at best.
