Thoughts from the Produce Section.

Produce aisle.jpgOn a recent stroll through the produce section of the supermarket, it occurred to me that by virtue of spending my entire life in Northern Jersey, I am agriculturally challenged. It is quite humbling to spend a lifetime buying fruits and vegetables, but having no idea about how they look to the person who grew and harvested them.

So, for the heck of it, I compiled a list of fruits and vegetables that I have seen while they are growing, and things that I have never seen on the vine, on a tree, or in the ground. As you can see below, I definitely am agriculturally challenged, but it is not quite as bad as I had originally suspected.

Fruits and Vegetables I Have Seen Growing

Seems I should put on shoes that I don’t mind getting dirty and travel a bit more to places where the things I like to eat are grown. I will, however, leave the farming to those who know what they’re doing. Besides, I have delicate hands, and manual labor gives me a rash.

  1. Come down here and I’ll show you at least half of those. I’ve grown a lot of them myself. I still grow my own blueberries, pecans, plums and pears. Those all grow on trees or bushes that you don’t have to plant every year.

  3. I always enjoyed picking up potatoes when I was a kid, gave me a perfect excuse to play in the dirt all I wanted. lol Funny how I generally hated gardening when I was young, but enjoy it so much now.

My tomatoes got hit by some mysterious disease this year and didn’t survive. I’m reduced to begging homegrown tomatoes from my dad. It’s heartbreaking really.

  4. It amazes me what will grow in Jersey. Our 100×150 lot currently supports lettuce, plums, broccoli, onions, spinach, currants, raspberries, grapes, and blueberries from your unseen list, along with squash, tomatoes, peas, carrots, pumpkins, peppers, eggplant, strawberries, and cherries. All that in less than a 1/4 of the lot.

  5. Damn, Ken, that is quite a garden, or should I say, mini-farm. Maybe it’s all the pollutants in the soil. 🙂

  6. New Jersey White Peaches.

    That’s all I gotta say.

  7. My grandmother used to grow peaches, pomegranates, plums, pecans and persimmons. I guess she liked things that begin with the letter P.

  8. I can show you the wheat out here in the middle of the country. I miss having my vegetable garden since I moved back to the city and apartment living.
