Ah! The 17 year cicadas! They were there when last I lived in Kenilworth. They were so loud.

I'll take them every day over the love bugs. I cannot get my windshield clean.

This is frickin' great! I love hearing your rendition of Florida living. Have you seen our 3-4 inch roaches that fly AT YOU? And hiss? Those are lovely... ;-)

Uh... <i>"...17-year cicadas of Joisey. The 2004 swarm..."</i> WTF is that all about?! Whatever it was, which I, thanks to The Maker, do not remember, I'm just glad they stayed on your side of the river.

We've dealt with them bastids in Texas...but even the Love-Bug Invasion doesn't hold a candle to the 17-year cicadas of Joisey. The 2004 swarm was un-be-farookin'-lievable.

They're about the same size as lightning bugs.

We get them twice a year all over Florida... irritating as hell, and another downside to them... when they splat on your vehicle as you're driving, the acidic bug-juice can eat through the paint! If you don't try to clean them off the car until after they are well-dried-on, almost impossible to clean off completely.

...and, yeah... I didn't get no phone call, either!..

Those things look like they're the size of Black Hawk choppers. Twer me, no musclebound beast or army would have been able to coax me out of an air-conditioned hotel room to do battle with those ass-f**ing winged turds. I'm scared to shuddering stooopification of most insects, and if they fly and are in great numbers, well...I'd sooner take my chances with the muggers, murderers and subway rats.

First Kerrville, now FL. From family that lives in the Emerald Coast zone, I believe the proper term for those insects is "phuk bugs." ;)

Jimbo .......

On one of my drinking?fishing trips to the wilds of Quebec the Blackflies which for their propensity for the practic of bloodsucking, can only be described as a role model for the liberal dimocrats were held at bay with the liberal usage of "Oil of Citronella" full strength all over clothes, arms legs & tackle.

The downside is the 6-engined hornets resident in the cedar forest were attracted to the smell. We had some of these behemoths land on the window screens of the cabin we were held hostage in & attempt to chew thru the screens. We counter-attacked with Raid yard bombs which left these creatures laying on the ground covered with a layer of white insect repellent laden foam . After about 15 minute they would arise , shake themselves off & fly off in an erratic manner.

Trolling for walleye at about 10 MPH with a cloud of Black flys in pursuit & a squadron of hornets dive bombing must have amused the native locals to no end.
