I Can Rest Easy Now.

time-person-of-the-year.jpgThat’s right. All will soon be well. The problems that exist in the Middle East, for which no one has come up with a foolproof solution, will all be sorted out, or, at a minimum, they will all be explained with absolute objectivity.

You see, Katie Couric will be going to Iraq and Syria. The country will be fine. Maybe she will even write her own stuff!

My very favorite Katie Couric Moment occurred early in 2004 on the Today Show. Time Magazine had just named “The American Soldier” as Person of the Year (See magazine cover above).

The Today Show audience was primed for Ms. Couric’s interview with the two gentlemen who were responsible for the cover story. The audience did not know that Ms. Couric was laying in wait, ready to spring.

Immediately after introducing the two men, Ms. Couric angrily confronted them with, “WHY ARE THERE NO WOMEN ON THE COVER?”

The two men looked at each other, then looked at Ms. Couric and said, “The soldier in the front IS A WOMAN!” (Her name is Marquette Whiteside** Spc. Billie Grimes. See also here.)

The “Six P’s” come to mind: Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance.

I can only imagine the bloody flailing of her staff that took place after the broadcast.

Katie should stick to “perky.”

** Thanks to Jerry for the correction (see comments). The Six P’s strike again. Maybe I could get a gig with Katie Couric.

  1. She should have stayed on the Today Show.

  2. Wow, so…she’s going to Iraq — a completely volatile and unpredictable part of the world, where kidnappings, and roadside & suicide bombings have become the nation’s norm — to boost her ratings?

    Dat’s just stoopid.

I think no matter where she ends up, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel, Lebanon, Syria…she, like her ratings, will always suck.

On a separate note, “The American Soldier” (I take this to include all members of the different branches of the Armed Forces?) should be the “Person of the Year,” every year. No other single civilian could walk in those shoes.

  3. Nothing to see here. Just another trip up Katie’s ass.

  4. I can only wonder whatever gave Katie the idea that she somehow… mattered.

  5. Jimbo,
Marquette Whiteside is the black male soldier. The female soldier in front is Spc. Billie Grimes. I only know this because she went to my high school many years after me.

  6. Parkway, isn’t the first rule of lawyering: don’t ask a question unless you know the answer (also applies to interviewers?)
I have not watched “The Today Show” since Dave Garroway left.

  7. BWAHAHAHAHAHA – Katie in Iraq… I can think of nothing less relevant and no one who will be ignored more.

  8. I will never forget Katie’s misguided glee when it was reported that Gore had won the election and then her tears for the whole world to see when she found that he had lost. Katie might be a lot of things but an objective journalist she is not..personally I think she missed her calling..she might have made one hell of a Reno show girl..I just don’t believe she could hack it in Las Vegas

  9. I read about this incident in the book ‘Blood Brothers’ by Michael Weisskopf.

  10. Katie is about as worthless as they come.

  11. I SO want to add something snippy about Katie because I detest her in the most powerful detest-y way possible, but I can’t think of anything snippy enough right now so I’ll just continue with my detesting.
