Middle Class Woes?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 8:30 pm

If you listen to the mainstream media and the politicians, you would likely conclude that the middle class is being “squeezed,” and that it’s struggling to scratch out a meager existence, miserable and being exploited by evil money-grubbing corporations.

The video points out that it just ain’t so.

  1. Well, a cut in the AMT would be nice…and since we are apparently a “consumer class”, wouldn’t lower taxes on us be the best thing for the economy?

But what really drives me crazy when I hear about “poverty” in America. Sure, there are poor people in this country, but did you know 97% of them own a color TV, and that the average dwelling of a poor person in America is larger than an average middle class citizen’s in Paris and London? And trust me, with a myriad of food stamp-type programs and $1 menus at Burget King, there is no reason for anyone to “go hungry” in America. True poverty – wearing rags, hand- to-mouth eating, families begging to survive on the street – has just about been eradicated in this country.

So when I hear politicians telling me my taxes need to go up to help all the poor folk, I know I am being sold a bill of goods. And once the discretionary income of the middle class goes down, they stop spending, and people lose their jobs. Incidentally, that’s how you create “the poor” (as well as foreclosures, bankruptcies, etc…)

    Wow. Sorry about the rant….

  2. I loved it. Thanks for posting this.

BTW. Re: cell phones. Reminds me of the time about 5 years ago, I was “dining” at Taco Bell at noon and this apparently HOMELESS ratty-looking barefoot guy begged me for a buck so he could “get something to eat.” He looked so pathetic. I felt so bad I gave him not one but TWO dollar bills, because after all I’m a “rich” evil conservative and all.

He blessed me repeatedly and ran outside with the 2 bucks.

Then I saw him dial up someone on his cell phone as he rode off into the sunset on his bicycle. Poor starving wretch.

  3. Ahhhhh, the ol’ champagne tastes on a beer budget. Honestly, I’ve no clue what class I am, middle, lower, or otherwise, but if I am middle class, and if I could swing three blogmeets in five months, and look the way I do (meaning, like someone who’s never gone hungry in her life, and who, more or less has a mostly stocked fridge), then the middle class thing is definitely working out for me. Either that, or I haven’t used up all my nine lives yet. I always seem to manage to land on my two feet.

  6. Good ol’ Drew! A hometown boy from good ol’ Cleveland! We’re proud to claim him as the Pride of Cleveland, or POC. (Don’t even think of saying it!)
