NYC — A Pleasant Surprise.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 8:15 pm

Went into Manhattan today with several legal types. Lunch at Sardi’s, a New York landmark, and afterwards we saw Mamma Mia. I had doubts about the show going in, as I am not an ABBA fan, and I’ve heard it said that no guy goes to see Mamma Mia unless he was dragged there by a woman.

Let me say that it is difficult to imagine someone not liking Mamma Mia. The performers had singing voices that could knock the rear wall down, the band was absolutely superb and there were plenty o’ laughs as well.

If you find yourself in New York and looking to be very well entertained for a couple hours, I highly recommend the show.

  1. I’ve heard the movie is excellent also.
I’ll have to settle for that since NYC is a bit of a jaunt 🙂

  2. I hold musicals in the same regard as wreaths of garlic and wooden stakes dipped in holy water… *shudder*

  3. The last Musical I was dragged to was West Side Story……Back then I still smoked & spent much of the time in the Movie lobby smoking with the other huge crowd of people similarily bored shitless. What a dreadful piece of crap that turkey of a movie was.

Since then I got rid of wife # 1, I no longer smoke & since I have a concealed weapons permit will never be forced to attend another musical. If I need real excitement …..I`ll go watch the grass rrow.

  6. I had absolutely no interest in this until I read that one of the lady leads in ABBA was the product of a Nazi eugenics program (now she’s chummy with the Queen of Sweden).

  8. Well, Suzette, to be honest I much prefer the Girls From Sweden to the Boys From Brazil…

  16. We saw the show at the Preforming Arts Center in San Jose a couple of years ago and it was great. Humor, music and enthusiasm. We had lunch at McDonalds

  17. I’ll just have to take your word for it. I like ABBA, when performed by ABBA. But everything I’ve heard on XM Radio’s Broadway station irritates the crap outta me. I won’t be rushing to see the movie. And when I get to NYC again, I won’t be standing in line for the play, either.

BTW, when I get to NYC again, I hope to stalk a certain Jimbo. Perhaps over a pizza on the Boulevard. I think you know where I mean.

  18. Whew. For a moment there I thought you might have gone to see the movie version of Mamma Mia.

Nothing like Pierce Brosnan singing to alter your attitude.

  19. Well, it’s a matter of taste. Some people just aren’t big on corny musicals (I don’t mean corny as an insult). Some people like more serious-toned plays. I personally didn’t like Momma Mia and was dragged there, but that’s just me.
