Crowns.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Jim @ 8:03 pm

On Sunday, one of the many crowns that cover several of my ground-down, sometimes root-canalled teeth came off as I was eating dinner. It wasn’t a peanut brittle type of dental misfortune. No, it was regular old food that did it. I guess it was just time.

Fortunately, I managed to save the strange looking thing (we never really get to check them out when they’re being put in), rather than swallowing it, in which case it would have been gone forever. I would rather endure the process and shoulder the expense of getting a new crown rather than searching through … oh, you know what I mean.

Anyway, through the good graces of Dr. Dentist, I was able to drop by late in the day to have my crown re-cemented. He did an expert job, but dammit, it just doesn’t feel the same as it did before it fell out. I’ll get used to it. Hell, I figure if it weren’t for the wonders of modern dentistry, I’d probably look like Barney Frank right about now.

Speaking of Barney Frank, is there a more detestable asshole on the planet?

That is all.

Update (even before this is posted): I finally got around to eating with my replaced crown, and there was lots of scrunching and sweaking as I chewed (the infernal high spot). Looks like I’ll be visiting Mr. Dentist again. Yo, it beats gumming your chow.

  1. I used super-glue myself on several occasions when it was inconvenient to get to the DDS. You’re right though, even when the dentist re-cements it, there’s usually a high spot that wasn’t there before. You probably didn’t get to read ALL the three year old People mags in the waiting room anyway with just one visit.

  2. Oh yeah, you need to go back to Mr. Dentist. It shouldn’t stick up that high although it’s often very difficult to tell when you’re in the office that things aren’t right.

I have a crown in the back of my mouth. It’s come off once before, but I expect it will do so again any time now. LOL.

  4. No, there is not a more detestable asshole on the planet. Bwawney Fwank takes the prize. However, I think I could add to the list, but then I’d be typing until after Thanksgiving.

  7. I had about 24 crowns at one time in my big mouth. Now as I get older, the crowns keep falling out. My dentist lied to me, when I had all of these installed, Cat

  8. When Barney Frank’s not busy screwing the taxpayers, he spends the rest of his time trying out all de testable assholes around Washington. They don’t call it Sodom on the Potomac for nothing.

  10. Dentistry will typically last 10-15 years. As I dentist I know VERY well puts it, ‘If what God gave you didn’t last a lifetime, don’t expect man’s to last a lifetime.”

Stuff just breaks down. Cement gets old. Sometimes its a bad batch of cement. Crowns come off and its unfortunate and inconvenient…

You need to go back. You can get headaches and gum irritation, just to name a few things, from an ill fitting crown. He may have to grind down a high spot… you just bite on what looks like carbon paper (probably is) and they can tell what is hitting where it should not.

The dentist I know very well has some cool software where you bite down on this tray that is electronically connected to the software and on the screen *Poof* it shows you how everything hits. Very very cool… it must be new because the last time I had to have something like that done, he used carbon paper. I hope he got a lot of Frequent Flier points from that purchase on his credit card. It will make his wife happy! 😉

    Good luck!
